NCBP Workshop 1B: The Bar’s Role in the Immigration Debate

Access to legal counsel is the cornerstone of our judicial system, and immigrants with attorneys are ten times more likely to prevail on the merits of their cases, but detained immigrants receive pro bono counsel less than 2% of the time. It’s clear that attorneys are a critical lifeline for detained immigrants, but what is the role of state, metro and specialty bar associations in providing help to unrepresented immigrants? Join us for a lively discussion on this issue.

The issue of access to justice in rural areas is a complicated one. Technological barriers, outstanding student loans for new lawyers, and smaller populations all lead to vast areas in many states that have no legal representation. The solutions, while varied, must be a collaboration between rural areas, metro and state bars, and the judiciary. During this session, you’ll hear from stakeholders as we work to find solutions to this complex problem.

Is your bar ready to tackle these changes to the practice of law and what they mean for your members? Don’t be left on the sideline as new regulations are being made – make sure your bar is ready.
